City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Imagine you’re wandering the bustling streets of New York City, with the city lights flickering and the sounds of the urban jungle surrounding you. It’s just another ordinary day—or so you think. But then, something extraordinary happens. Fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club, expecting nothing more than a night of fun with her best friend Simon. Little does she know that her world is about to be turned upside down in the most epic way possible.

As Clary steps into the club, she witnesses a murder—committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. But here’s the twist: the body disappears into thin air, leaving no trace behind. It’s a scene straight out of a nightmare, and Clary finds herself unable to shake the chilling encounter from her mind. One minute she’s chilling with her best friend Simon, the next she’s witnessing some seriously strange stuff—like invisible people and symbols no one else can see. Talk about a wild ride!

But, hold onto your hats, because it gets even crazier. Clary soon discovers she’s part of a hidden world of shadowhunters—badass warriors who hunt demons and protect humanity from all things spooky. And, let’s not forget about Jace Wayland, the swoon-worthy shadowhunter with a knack for snarky remarks and a heart of gold. Cue the heart palpitations, folks!

Together with a motley crew of shadowhunters—including the fierce Isabelle and the lovably nerdy Simon—Clary embarks on a quest to unravel the mysteries of her past and save her mom from some seriously sinister forces (cough cough Valentine). From dodging demons in dark alleyways to uncovering ancient prophecies, Clare takes us on a whirlwind adventure that’ll leave you breathless and begging for more.

Aside from the action and adventure, there’s plenty of romance to swoon over too. Whether it’s the simmering tension between Clary and Jace or the adorable banter between Clary and Simon, there’s a love story here for everyone. Amidst all the demon-slaying and world-saving, our characters grapple with deeper themes of identity, loyalty, and the power of friendship.

What really sets City of Bones up for success is Clare’s knack for world-building and her whip-smart writing style. With vivid descriptions and snappy dialogue, she brings the shadow world to life in a way that’s utterly captivating. You’ll find yourself lost in the streets of New York City, battling demons and uncovering ancient secrets right alongside our heroes.

Engaging Plot: Does the book have a compelling storyline that keeps readers hooked from beginning to end? We couldn’t put the book down, or the next five that follow it. Be prepared to not only be sucked into this book, but into the series.

Well-Developed Characters: Are the characters multidimensional, with realistic motivations, flaws, and growth throughout the story? While it’s hard to picture these characters as teenagers barely old enough to drive, they are complex and relatable. Part of us wanted them to be real just to talk to them, see them, interact with them – maybe even be friends with them.

Strong Writing: Is the prose well-crafted, with vivid descriptions, realistic dialogue, and a consistent narrative voice? The writing is phenomenal. The descriptions are, in our opinion, better at painting a picture than a movie ever could. The dialogue is natural and flows from one conversation to the next.

Emotional Impact: Does the book evoke a range of emotions in readers, from laughter and joy to sadness and empathy? We could talk about this all day long, and then some. In short, heck yeah it does!

Originality: Does the book bring something fresh and unique to its genre or subject matter, avoiding clichés and predictable plot twists? This book, and subsequently this series, is set up to be extremely unique. There isn’t much else out there quite like this. Cassandra Clare did a great job executing her vision.

Pacing: Is the pacing of the story appropriate, with a good balance of action, exposition, and character development? We can’t think of a single flaw regarding the pacing – we were hooked the entire time.

World-Building: Does the book create a richly imagined world that feels immersive and believable? If we could move to the world this took place in, we would.

Theme and Message: Does the book explore meaningful themes and deliver a message that resonates with readers? There were so many different meaningful themes and concepts surfacing. From friendship to love to perseverance, we can only wonder what becomes of them in the following books.

Resolution: Does the book provide a satisfying resolution to its central conflicts and story arcs? It’s a good thing the second book is already released. We would have gone crazy waiting otherwise.

Overall Enjoyment: Most importantly, did we enjoy the book? Absolutely. We will be reading it again, and bet it’s one you’ll read several times too.
