To catch everyone up, Eadlyn is the future queen of Illea and, as a princess, is already making huge sacrifices for her country. With the masses in political unrest since the castes were dissolved, Maxon is desperate for a distraction. Since Eadlyn is as single as could be, Maxon and America propose that she have her own Selection.
Unlike her parents’ fairy-tale romance, Eadlyn isn’t exactly thrilled about the whole Selection process. She’s tough, independent, and sees the whole bride-selection thing as a royal nuisance rather than a chance for love. But hey, who can blame her? She’s got a kingdom to run someday.
While initially resistant to the idea of a Selection, viewing it as a distraction from her responsibilities, Eadlyn eventually agrees to the process to appease her parents and to buy time to address the growing unrest in the kingdom.
Throughout the Selection process, Eadlyn meets a diverse array of suitors, each bringing their own backgrounds and motivations to the palace. Some are genuine in their intentions, while others have hidden agendas. Men, right? Despite her initial reluctance and a few bad apples, Eadlyn begins to develop deeper connections with some of the more likable candidates.
The Selection is not without challenges, though, as Eadlyn faces public scrutiny, political pressures, and internal conflicts as she tries to balance her personal feelings with her responsibilities as a leader.
As the competition progresses, Eadlyn’s perspective on love and her role as a leader evolves. She begins to make significant decisions about her future and the future of her kingdom.
There is no doubt that her journey is marked by personal growth as she learns about the struggles of her people and gains insights into the true nature of love and sacrifice. But, how exactly will she choose to deal with it? Will she rise up to the challenge? Find love? Run away?

Of course, it isn’t any different for The Heir, which offers a compelling storyline with the introduction of a new protagonist, Princess Eadlyn Schreave, navigating the challenges of a Selection while dealing with political unrest and personal growth.
Well-Developed Characters: Are the characters multidimensional, with realistic motivations, flaws, and growth throughout the story? Eadlyn and the supporting characters are multidimensional, each with their own motivations, flaws, and arcs of growth throughout the story. The interactions between Eadlyn and the men participating in the Selection are unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.
Strong Writing: Is the prose well-crafted, with vivid descriptions, realistic dialogue, and a consistent narrative voice? Without a doubt, Kiera Cass demonstrates strong writing. Her prose is rich with vivid descriptions that paint a detailed picture of the world of Illea, while the dialogue feels natural and true to each character.
Emotional Impact: Does the book evoke a range of emotions in readers, from laughter and joy to sadness and empathy? From the heartwarming moments of romance to the gut-wrenching dilemmas faced by the characters, the novel takes readers on an emotional journey that resonates long after the final page. Kiera Cass had us laughing, crying, and everything in between.

Overall Enjoyment: Most importantly, did we enjoy the book? We had a blast diving into this book! It was like stepping into a whole new world filled with excitement, romance, and unexpected twists at every turn. The characters felt like real people we’d want to hang out with, and the story had us completely hooked from start to finish. We read this book every year, and we have yet to get sick of it!
